Arrojadoa
Small columnar cacti common in Brazil which every season produce a flowering organ (cephalium) on the top of the mature stems, made up of bristly spines and compact fluff from which the flowers emerge. Subsequently, the growth of the stems resumes, forming characteristic chains of 'sausages'.
The genus includes bush forms with very thin and slender stems and other, more robust ones with little or no branching stems, that reach even two meters in height.
The multiplication is mainly done by cuttings, which allows to quickly obtain flowering plants. Specimens reproduced by sowing take a few years to reach maturity.
The flowers appear in all seasons of the year and are numerous, tubular and gathered in bunches, generally mauve or pink in colour, while the fruits are roundish berries which detach spontaneously when ripe.
Arrojadoa is easily attacked by the scale insect and by fungal diseases if ventilation is scarce.
