Very curious species, which produces a large underground caudex to store water and starch, and a very thin but robust branch bearing flowers, up to three meters long in the specimens in nature and which occasionally dries up to be quickly replaced by a new shoot.
The flowers are showy, numerous and of an intense red color.
It moderately resists the cold if kept dry all winter.
